The Origins

The Wisdom at Work Fund stems from the vision of Ilana Landsberg-Lewis, a former labour and human rights lawyer,
former CEDAW/Human Rights Advisor at the United Nations Development Fund for Women, and co-founder and former
Executive Director of the Stephen Lewis Foundation (SLF) in Toronto, Canada. During her tenure at the SLF, Ilana
launched a campaign (now a global movement) of more than 10,000 grandmothers and ‘grand-others’ in Canada (the
U.K. and Australia), who have raised more than $40 million to support the powerful grassroots work of the legions of
indomitable grandmothers in sub-Saharan Africa raising millions of children orphaned by HIV and AIDS, and advocating
for their rights. 15 years and still going strong, the Grandmothers’ Movement and its tenacious work, love and dedication to the improvement of the human condition continues to be an inspiration.
